Learning About Automotive Parts

Hello, my name is Talon. Welcome to my site about automotive parts. After 15 years of driving, I still have my very first car. For a long time, this cherished vehicle sat under a car cover in the garage. Now that I have the time and funds available, I started slowly restoring the car from the bottom up. I used a mix of original equipment and aftermarket parts to renew the vehicle’s suspension, brakes, engine, transmission and other important components. I will use this site to explore all of the parts you may need to buy or rebuild to restore your own vehicle. Thanks for visiting.

Car Break Down On The Road? 3 Reasons Why You Should Use A Towing Service Instead Of Doing It Yourself

Paula Shaw

If your car breaks down on the side of the road, you have the choice of calling someone to try to tow you home or calling a towing service. You may consider calling a friend or family member to help you save money but this is not a good choice, and below are three reasons why.

Wrong Hookup

Not being a professional towing service, you may not hook up your car to the car that is pulling you correctly. Strong, large chains must be used to hook the two vehicles together or your car could easily break away. Once this happens, the car could go anywhere, such as in another lane on the road or down an embankment.  The driver pulling you may also lose control of their vehicle when the car breaks away.

If you have to move the car a short distance to get it to a safer area you should use a tow strap to attach it to the other vehicle.

Engine Problems

If the engine of the towing vehicle is not as large as the car they are towing, this can put a lot of strain on the engine. When this happens, the transmission may start slipping, and over time there would be transmission problems that would have to be repaired. If there is a lot of straining, the engine could even blow.

Front Car Damage

Even if your car does not break away during the towing, you could still have damage to the front end of your car. Your car could move forward and hit the vehicle pulling you. This will also damage the rear of their vehicle. This is because without using a tow truck, it is impossible to ensure both vehicles constantly drive at the same speed.

When connected to a tow truck this will not happen because of the way your car is hooked up. With a wheel-lift tow truck, the drivable wheels are lifted off the ground during transport. If a flatbed tow truck is used, your entire car is placed on the bed of the truck.

Depending on the state that you live in, towing a vehicle without a professional tow truck may be illegal. If you live in one of these states, you would get a ticket and may have to pay a lot of fees. This may cost you more money than what you would have paid the tow truck driver in the first place. Call a local towing trucking, as they likely know the laws, or you could call the local DOT (Department of Transportation) for this information.
